They are all defensible. They are also measuring four different things.

Sitewide traffic share counts every session on Amazon: search, browse, Prime Video, order tracking, the lot. It sits at the low end of the range, and it is close to useless for a creative decision.

Detail-page session share counts sessions on your product page specifically. It runs higher than sitewide traffic because mobile shoppers open more pages and buy less per page. This is the one that matters for images.

App usage share counts app sessions against mobile browser sessions. Different question entirely, and the app renders images differently from mobile web.

Purchase share counts of completed orders. It is consistently the lowest of the four, and it is the reason the gap exists at all: mobile shoppers browse more and buy less.

Stack those four on top of each other, quote them interchangeably, and you get a spread of nearly 20 points. Which is roughly what has happened across the writing on this topic.

Four things happen to your file on its way to a shopper. None of them are visible in the preview you approved.

The thumbnail renders at a fraction of your source file

In search results, your main image is a thumbnail, and it is the only image that exists at that moment. The title is truncated. The bullets are not there. A+ Content is five taps away. The entire click decision runs through one small square.

Your designer built that square at 2000 pixels. The shopper sees it somewhere between 100 and 160, depending on device width and grid layout. Everything that reads at 2000 and disappears at 160 is decoration you paid for, and nobody sees. Fine print on the packaging. Surface texture. The second product in the frame. The subtle angle your team argued about for a week.

The carousel is the entire above-the-fold decision

On desktop, attention splits four ways: image panel, title block, bullets, and buy box. All of it is visible at once. The image is one of several inputs.

On a phone, the carousel takes up almost the entire first screen, with the title tucked underneath. Bullets collapse behind a see-more link. The buy box sits below the fold. The carousel is not supporting the sale on mobile. It is making it. Which means slot order stops being a design preference and becomes the sequence of your argument.

A+ Content collapses into a vertical stack

Amazon renders A+ modules in a single column on mobile. Every multi-column module flattens. The comparison chart your team spent a week on, four columns wide and genuinely good at 970 pixels, becomes a stack of rows the shopper scrolls past on the way to reviews.

This is the mechanic most creative teams have never seen, because they have never opened their own A+ on a phone.

Compression and the zoom threshold

Amazon re-encodes images for mobile delivery. Your 10MB source is not what ships. What ships is a compressed derivative sized for the slot and the connection.

Resolution matters here for a reason beyond sharpness. Below Amazon’s threshold, zoom does not activate. No zoom means no pinch, no close inspection, and no engagement signal from a shopper who wanted a better look but didn’t get one.

Desktop infographics ported straight across

Six callouts, an icon row, a spec table in the corner, and a headline in 28-point type. At 500 pixels it is a well-organized image. At 160 Hz it is grey noise with a product somewhere in the middle.

The instinct is to shrink the type and keep the content. That is backward. The fix is subtraction. One message per image, sized to survive the smallest render the image will ever get. If your infographic needs six callouts to make its point. You do not have an infographic problem. You have six images’ worth of content crammed into one slot, and you have seven slots.

This is harder than it sounds, because all six callouts were true and each one was somebody’s priority. Cutting four of them is a political act inside a brand team. Do it anyway.

No scale reference anywhere in the set

A pure white background is compliant. It is also dimensionless. A 6-inch screen gives a shopper no cue about whether your product is the size of a thumb or a toaster.

The cost does not appear where you expect it. It shows up 30 days later as returns and one-star reviews from buyers who got exactly what they ordered and not what they pictured. Conversion looked fine. Margin did not.

Put the product in hand, next to a known object, or with labeled dimensions, and put it in slot 2 or 3, where a mobile shopper is still paying attention.

Slot order built for desktop attention

Mobile shoppers decay through a carousel fast. Two swipes, maybe three, then they scroll to price and reviews. A desktop shopper with a thumbnail rail down the side will graze all seven without thinking.

So slot order carries far more weight on a phone than on a monitor. If slot 2 is your brand story tile and slot 6 is the comparison image that closes the objection your reviews complain about most, you have sequenced your argument for an audience that left three slots ago.

Front-load the objection handling. Scale, primary use case, and the one comparison that matters belong in slots 1-3. Packaging shots and brand storytelling go to the back or come out entirely.

Variation swatches without text labels

There is no hover on a phone. A color chip or a pattern square with no text beside it is a guess.

Shoppers guess wrong, and wrong-variant purchases come back as returns and as reviews that read like product failures but are actually navigation failures. On a catalog with heavy variant counts, this is quietly one of the more expensive problems in the set, and almost nobody audits it because it does not look like an image problem.

Label every swatch. Not with the color name your brand team invented. With the one the shopper searched for.

A main image that vanishes in the grid

At thumbnail size, two things determine whether your product registers: how much of the frame it fills and how strongly it contrasts against white.

Amazon’s floor is 85 percent fill. That is a compliance floor, not a target. A white or pale product on a white background at 160 pixels is a smudge with a price under it, no matter how good the photography is. The answer is angle, shadow depth, and fill, not brightness.

Do not solve mobile legibility by adding text, badges, or graphics to your main image. Amazon prohibits them in slot 1, and they are a suppression trigger. A hard-to-read thumbnail costs you clicks. A suppressed listing costs you all of them.

 

Every guide gives you a different font plan

24-point, 30-point, 32-point, 48-point. Four different minimums from four confident sources.

They cannot all be right because none of them answer the question. Points are a print unit. They describe type relative to a physical page. Your image is not a page. It is a canvas that gets rescaled several times before a human sees it.

32-point type on a 1000-pixel canvas and 32-point type on a 2000-pixel canvas render at completely different sizes on the same phone. The number is meaningless without the canvas it assumes, and no guide tells you which canvas it assumed.

What matters is rendered cap height: how tall your capital letters end up in physical pixels once the image has been scaled to its display size. Work backward from the render, not forward from the design file.

Until you have a rule, the crude version works. Export the image, scale it to 160 pixels wide, and hold it at arm’s length. If you cannot read it, neither can your buyer.

Diagnose before you redesign

The most expensive mistake in this area is not a bad image. It is spending $4,000 on new photography when the problem was three slots further down.

Pull your own device split

Compute the gap between mobile and desktop conversion across your top 10 SKUs by revenue. Then rank them by revenue multiplied by the size of the gap, not by the gap alone. A 45 percent gap on an SKU doing $12,000 a year is curious. A 22 percent gap on an SKU doing $1.4 million is a budget.

Separate a click problem from a conversion problem

Two failure modes, two different fixes, two very different invoices.

If sessions are low relative to impressions, nobody is clicking. That is a main image problem: fill, contrast, angle, thumbnail legibility. It is the cheapest fix on this list and the highest leverage because click-through rate compounds across every impression you pay for.

If sessions look healthy and Unit Session Percentage is weak, people are clicking and leaving. That is a carousel and an A+ problem. Your main image is writing cheques. The rest of the set is not cashing in, and you are paying for clicks that were never going to convert.

Run this split before you brief anyone. It takes 20 minutes and decides where the money goes.

The screen-count test

Open the ASIN on your phone in an incognito browser. Not the seller app. Not the preview. A cold shopper session.

Take screenshots of every screen between the hero image and the first review, then count them. If it takes more than eight or nine screens to reach social proof, your A+ is burying the thing that closes the sale, and mobile shoppers are not making that trip.

Tip

No phone handy? Resize your browser window to 375 pixels wide and load the listing. It is not a perfect match for the app render, but it catches most legibility and crop failures from your desk in about ten seconds.

What the independent research actually shows

Almost everything written about Amazon images cites Amazon or cites an agency’s own client book. Both are useful. Neither is independent.

The one large-sample independent body of ecommerce usability research that touches this problem does not mention Amazon at all, which is probably why nobody in this space uses it. Two findings transfer directly.

The first: product images are the first thing most shoppers interact with on a product page. Ahead of price, ahead of reviews, ahead of the title. That is a behavioral finding from moderated testing, not a marketing claim, and it holds across categories and across sites.

The second is the one that should worry you. When an image gallery truncates its thumbnails without a clear signal that more images exist, most users never see the additional images. Not fewer users. Most of them. Now apply that to Amazon’s mobile carousel, where there is no thumbnail rail, and the only cue is a row of dots. That finding says slots 4 through 7 may be functionally invisible to a large share of your mobile traffic, which is another argument for front-loading.

What does not fix a mobile image problem

Three things brands reach for that will not close this gap.

More reviews. Past a few hundred, additional reviews do not fix a structural listing problem. If the shopper cannot read your image, more social proof underneath it is not the lever.

More images. Filling slots 4 through 7 while slots 1 through 3 are broken is a waste of money on the carousel most mobile shoppers never reach. Fix the front.

Winning the A/B test. This one is worth sitting with. Amazon’s testing tool measures conversion. It does not measure margin. An image variant that oversells, flatters the product, or fudges the scale will often win a conversion test and then quietly raise your return rate 60 days later, by which point nobody connects the two.

That last one is the trade-off nobody wants to write down. The most persuasive image and the most accurate image are not always the same, and Amazon’s tooling will happily reward you for choosing the first. Watch returns for two months after any image change, not two weeks. A winning variant that returns at 14 percent is not a winner.

Everything above assumes you have one listing. Most brands reading this have between 40 and 500.

Run the numbers. A proper mobile fix on a single ASIN means redesigning slots 1 through 3 at minimum, relabeling variants, and resequencing A+. Buying that per ASIN at typical agency rates, a 200-SKU catalog is a six-figure project on a twelve-month timeline. So it does not happen. What happens instead is that the brand fixes its top 20 SKUs and leaves 180 sitting on creative uploaded during launch week and never once opened on a phone.

We have watched brands sit in that position for years. Not because they did not know the images were bad. Because the math never worked.

The fix is to stop pricing the work per ASIN and start structuring it per family.

  1. Pull the device apart. Brand Analytics, then Search Catalog Performance, filtered by SKU, top 20 by revenue.
  2. Rank by revenue multiplied by gap. The biggest number goes first. Not the biggest gap. The biggest exposure.
  3. Open the top five on a phone, incognito, and cold. Take screenshots of every screen from the hero to the first review.
  4. Run slots 1 through 3 against the five failure patterns above. Ignore slots 4 through 7 for now.
  5. Separate the diagnosis. Weak sessions mean the main image. “Weak Unit Session Percentage” means “carousel” and “A+.”
  6. Fix one variable per SKU. Two changes at once and you learn nothing from either.
  7. Hold 60 days. Read conversion and return rate together, not conversion alone.

Honest about the cost: this is roughly a week of work for a top 10, and it is not a Saturday project for a full catalog. If you have more than 100 SKUs, do not start here. Start with the family grouping, or you will spend six months auditing and never ship a fix.
